How do we make our schools safer — and how do we stop the next school shooting before it happens?

The Only Way Out Is Through: Safer Schools, Stronger Communities brings that question directly to the people who live with it every day.

Hosted and moderated by Emmy Award-winning television personality, advocate and U.S. Marine and Navy veteran Montel Williams, this powerful town hall brings together law enforcement, educators, mental-health professionals, public officials, prevention experts and members of the community for a candid conversation about one of the most urgent issues facing America: keeping students, teachers and school staff safe.

Filmed at the Historic Shorter Community AME Church in Denver, Colorado, the forum moves beyond political talking points and concentrates on what can actually be done. The discussion examines prevention, recognizing warning signs, mental health and trauma, responsible firearm storage, the role of law enforcement, communication between schools and families, healing after violence and the practical steps communities can take before tragedy occurs.

But Safer Schools, Stronger Communities isn't simply a panel of experts talking to an audience.

The audience is part of the conversation.

Questions, experiences and concerns from the people in the room become an essential part of the forum, allowing experts and community members to speak directly with one another. That exchange is central to the mission of the program: meaningful solutions begin when people are willing to listen to each other.

The program deliberately refuses to glorify the perpetrators of school shootings. Their names and images are not the story.

The students are.

The teachers are.

The families are.

The people trying to prevent the next tragedy are.

Created by Maggie Grant and produced by GrantWorks Productions in partnership with Montel Media, Safer Schools, Stronger Communities is the inaugural town hall in a planned national initiative designed to bring these conversations into communities across America.

Its premise is deliberately simple:

School safety isn't a political issue — it's a human one.

And its mission is even simpler:

Together, we can build safer schools and stronger communities.

THIS WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING

The Denver event was conceived as the inaugural forum in a national Safer Schools, Stronger Communities tour. Rather than producing a single documentary about school shootings, creator and executive producer Maggie Grant developed a format that could travel from community to community, allowing each city to participate in its own conversation about school safety while contributing to a much larger national discussion.

MONTEL WILLIAMS DOESN'T JUST HOST

Montel Williams serves as host, moderator and co-producer of Safer Schools, Stronger Communities. His job goes far beyond introducing speakers. Williams guides the discussion, challenges the panel, interacts with the audience and helps connect perspectives from people whose professional and personal experiences with school safety can be very different.

THE AUDIENCE HAS A VOICE

One of the defining elements of Safer Schools, Stronger Communities is audience participation. The people attending the forum aren't simply spectators. Their questions and experiences become part of the program itself, creating a genuine exchange between experts and the community.

NO PERPETRATOR GLORIFICATION

A fundamental editorial decision was made from the beginning: the program would not build its storytelling around the names, photographs or notoriety of school shooters.

The focus remains on prevention, victims, survivors, students, teachers, families, first responders, experts and the people working to keep another shooting from happening.

ONE TABLE — VERY DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES

The Denver forum was deliberately designed to bring different disciplines into the same conversation. Participants included law enforcement leaders, mental-health and prevention professionals, educators, public officials and community voices.

Instead of presenting school safety as a problem belonging to one profession or political viewpoint, the forum asks what happens when people with very different experiences actually sit together and talk.

THE HISTORIC SHORTER COMMUNITY AME CHURCH

The inaugural forum was held April 9, 2026, at Historic Shorter Community AME Church in Denver, Colorado.

The setting gave the first Safer Schools, Stronger Communities gathering something particularly appropriate: rather than originating in a television studio or government building, the conversation began inside a community.

PREVENTION BEFORE TRAGEDY

Although school shootings inevitably involve conversations about what happens during and after an attack, the Denver forum places significant emphasis on what can happen before one.

Warning signs, communication, intervention, mental health, firearm storage, education and community awareness are all part of the larger question: what opportunities exist to interrupt the path toward violence before students and teachers are in danger?

SAFE STORAGE BECAME PART OF THE MISSION

The Denver initiative extended beyond conversation. Firearm safe-storage education and materials were incorporated into the event, including free cable gun locks.

It was a practical extension of the philosophy behind the entire program: discussion matters, but information and tangible preventive action matter too.

Safer Schools, Stronger Communities exists under the larger initiative The Only Way Out Is Through.

The idea behind the title reflects the philosophy of the project itself: difficult subjects cannot be solved by refusing to discuss them. Progress requires communities to confront the problem, listen to one another and work through it together.

AINTOID: THIS IS ABOUT SCHOOLS

The mission of Safer Schools, Stronger Communities is intentionally specific.

Its focus is students, teachers, school staff, schools and the prevention of school shootings. Broader issues involving street violence and community violence belong to a separate GrantWorks initiative, Safer Streets, Stronger Communities.

Keeping those missions distinct allows Safer Schools, Stronger Communities to remain concentrated on the unique challenges of protecting America's schools.

Denver was designed as the starting point, not the destination.

The long-term vision for Safer Schools, Stronger Communities is to take the forum into communities around the country, bringing together local voices, national expertise and audiences willing to participate in one of America's most difficult conversations.

Each community may bring different experiences and different questions to the table.

The objective WILL ALWAYS remain the same:
